How can exercise help?
We're so glad you asked!
What is an Exercise Physiologist?
An allied health professional who prescribes exercise as a treatment intervention to bring about certain changes in the body. Exercise Physiologists study the effect that exercise has on the body and the ways that physical activity can be used to; treat (reduce or reverse) disease; prepare for, and aid, recovery from injury or surgery; and support good health. What can an Exercise Physiologist do for me? An Exercise Physiologist can provide you with a prescription and exercise education that is personalised for you. That means, your life, your fitness level, your goals and your body. We work with you to improve your health and support you along the way with strategies to maintain motivation and empower you to sustain behaviour change. Why would I come to see an Exercise Physiologist? There are many reasons! Maybe you have been referred by your GP. Maybe you have a chronic health condition that could benefit from exercise intervention. Maybe you have some surgery coming up - or have you already had it?! Maybe you are experiencing some mental health issues and you have heard exercise can help. Your reason will be your own. Do I need a referral? No you don't. GPs can refer you on a 'GP Management Plan' if you have a chronic condition (lasts for longer than 3 months). BUT, you can also just come on in without a referral. What do I do if my GP refers me? Make your appointment and let us know that you have a referral. Bring your referral to your appointment. We will make a plan together in line with what the GP suggests and I will report back to them via letter. Why do you say that you can work with people at any stage of life? Because I can! Exercise is something of a miracle drug (except that it's not and it doesn't have any of the nasty side effects either). The research has shown that exercise improves quality of life and decreases negative symptoms of ageing. Exercise can help preserve your muscles, memory and cognitive functioning - it keeps your muscles, bones and mind strong. What's not to love?! |
